National Science Week
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. This year on Saturday 15 August 2026 join us at Hurstville Library to grow your mind and ignite your curiosity as ideas take root and the seeds of science captivate budding scientists of all ages.

Bush Tucker Exploration with Koori Kinnections
Spice! Mix! Create! Join Koori Kinnections to grind native pepper-berries and make tasty kangaroo meatballs with tomato sauce. In this interactive cooking demonstration, children will learn about local bushfoods and their traditional and contemporary uses, as they assist in cooking kangaroo meatballs with a native pepper-berry tomato sauce.
Bookings are required for this ‘hands on’ experience with native plants and traditional resources, please secure your spot here.

Design and 3D Print a Plant Pot
Sow the seeds of 3D printing and design in these workshops throughout Play and Explore with Tinkery. Learn the science behind 3D printers, the basics of TinkerCAD and then spend some time designing a perfect pot for your plants at home.
Designs will be printed throughout the Play and Explore event, so even if you don’t meet the minimum age requirement for this session you can still watch the designs bloom from the 3D printers in action.

Storytime Science: Tiny Wonders
Storytime Science is a hands-on science and literacy program combining picture book readings with hands-on STEM activities including engaging experiments and creative crafts. Families can explore the science of seeds through our carefully picked stories, then make your own bouquet of craft flowers to take home and enjoy. These story time sessions will be accompanied by an Auslan interpreter.

Sensation Succulents Workshop
Succulents are tough, waterwise little plant characters that are so unique and groovy looking that you’ll want to collect them all! The green team from Hort4Kidz will talk about the science of succulents and soil, before participants decorate their own pot and choose a succulent to take home and enjoy!

Virtual Art Gardenscape with Nested Realities
Create a collaborative gardenscape artwork in Virtual Reality using 3D drawing application Tilt Brush, under the expert guidance of the team from Nested Realities.

Seed Sphere Scavenger Hunt
Explore even more at this year’s Play and Explore! Search around the library for our hidden seed sites, and make a collection that you can use at the seed sphere creation station.
Roll up a biodegradable ball that you can save for spring, and enjoy the science of seeds long after Science Week ends!
Seed scavenging and the sphere creation station are self-paced throughout the duration of Play and Explore.
